PRESS RELEASE – June 2019
Help make our dream come true!
To expand the footprint of The HUB Child & Family Centre (The HUB) which would allow for sufficient space to deliver core services and bring back EarlyON and Administrative staff “under one roof”. The HUB is the EarlyON lead for Prince Edward County. It is our desire to be able to offer and meet the needs of families and their children in a one-stop location, collaborating with our community partners, offering high-quality programs and services.
The HUB’s Board of Directors have identified through their Strategic Planning process, a need to expand the Picton Main Site in order to meet the growing needs of Prince Edward County’s children and families.
Phase I of the expansion was the retrofitting of The HUB’s EarlyON and Administrative spaces at the Picton Main Site, enabling increased licensed childcare spaces. This work was completed in late 2018 and became operational in March 2019. In this vision, and to meet our needs, we are proposing a multi-purpose, large gross motor room the size of a gym, that could be used by both licensed and unlicensed (EarlyON) programs. In addition, we envision EarlyON playgroup-program space with a kitchen area for parent education in the evening and for play-based learning for parent/child interaction during the day.
In our everyday business before the retrofit, we recognized the need for additional childcare spaces in the Picton area and managed it by moving EarlyON programs off-site to schools, libraries, churches, outdoor spaces, etc. and we were given Ministry approval to use the space for licensed childcare. Now, with the retrofit complete, the EarlyON playgroup-programs and Administrative staff have a temporary home-base located at The Rick Hotston Centre at 5 McFarland Drive, near The HUB’s home location at 10 McFarland Court, Picton.
EarlyON, Administration staff, and the community need a permanent space to call home. We will be more efficient and financially responsible, managing business in our own space. The rent for other spaces, that are not meeting our current needs, as a temporary solution has been fine but it is time to bring us all back together “under the same roof”.
We have witnessed first-hand the value of meeting parents where they are on their parenting continuum, providing programs and services in a one-stop HUB location; meeting parents needs prenatally through to school age. When we offer prenatal services for families, it is our opportunity to educate them about what quality childcare is and looks like. We can give parents the information they need to support them on their parenting journey; connecting them to HUB services/programs, parent education, and community partners.
Please join us in making this a reality for our Community.
